Chapter 12

"I can't open it." Josh stared at the leather bag that was now fully exposed and sitting on the counter in front of us.

It was time.

It was the big moment.

"How much do you need?" I asked, staring at it right along with him. "I mean, if you don't mind me asking. You don't have to answer that. I didn’t mean to get into your business or anythi—"

"He's investing a lot," Josh said. "Taylor, I mean. Probably upwards of four or five million. I can invest in up to half. I won't come up with nearly that much, but I'll see a return on whatever percentage I'm able to buy into. I'd love to try to come up with a million, but that's just me dreaming, really. I think I could get investors at a half a million back home. More if I asked for help from the Stones, but I don't want to do that. To answer your question, the amount is flexible, thanks to Taylor. He's being really cool about the whole thing."

I was on the very verge of asking if Taylor was flexible enough to open the hotel in Boston instead of Long Beach, but since that was less of a joke and more of an actual wish, I decided not to say it.

"He seems so nice," I said. "Everybody who worked at the hotel back when he came to consult says how cool he was. His book was written before he met his wife, so it didn't say anything about her or the Stone family. Everybody said Alec Stone used to come to Boston quite a bit, but he's only been once since I've been working there. I didn't get to meet him."

"The Stones are really good people. I knew them before I knew Taylor. I've definitely gotten to know them the better since I've been living there, though. I see them all the time with Blue living right there in the hotel and everything. They're going to have a baby."

"That's what you were saying."

"Did I mention it already? We've been talking so much, I forget what I told you."

"You didn't tell me when it was due."

"Not for a while. Late summer, I think. They just found out."

I stared at him. "Josh?"

"Yeah?"

"You have to open that bag."

He hadn't known what I was going to say, and he grinned. He put his hands on the zipper. "Now I see why my mom couldn’t do it," he said. "I must take after her. Part of me just wants to bury it again and not even know."

"Do you think she really buried it without even looking inside?" I asked.

"I know she did," he answered with a nod.

"Well, I want to look," I said. "If you don't want to be the first one, you can look that way, and I'll do it."

"I'll do it," Josh said. "It's not that I'm not able to… it's just…"

He stopped speaking as he unzipped the bag.

I watched, unblinking, waiting to see what he would find.
